McDonald’s dominant Melbourne Cup carnival gave the champion jockey five Group 1 wins for the spring carnival, joining Brett Prebble at the top of the national standings, one win ahead of Hall of Famer Damien Oliver. Verry Elleegant’s demolition job of her Melbourne Cup rivals, beating Caulfield Cup winner Incentivise and English stayer Spanish Mission, gave the Flemington two-miler a lofty 126.2 rating. Nature Strip’s narrow win over Masked Crusader and Eduardo in The Everest at Randwick last month earned the race a Timeform rating of 126.3 and the No.1 ranking. The Everest has edged out the Melbourne Cup as the highest rating race of the spring carnival.
